J’ai passé mon enfance au Cambodge dans une plantation de caoutchouc, où les arbres sont alignés sans horizon visuel. Puis dans la jungle, où il n’y a pas non plus de perspective. Lors de mes premiers voyages en Asie, notamment en Indonésie, je n’ai eu de cesse de chercher l’horizon, de respirer avec l’horizon. Le paysage à perte de vue, c’est un sentiment de liberté.
J’ai découvert l’Afrique avec le Nord du Mali, où l’horizon n’a pas de fin, paysages désertiques animés seulement par quelques bosquets. J’ai cherché à retrouver cette sensation en Sibérie polaire, dans la toundra. Je n’étais pas à la recherche du vide, mais plutôt à l’affut de signes –
le lichen, l’arbuste... – de vie.
De la vue au vivre, c’est ce à quoi le paysage nous invite.

he Jules Maeght Gallery is pleased to present Bitter Creek Sweet Water, a group exhibition influenced by the nostalgia of the American West. The exhibition features four local artists: Marshall Elliott, Paul Kos, Isabelle Sorrell and Christopher Upham, who engage in a multimedia dialogue encompassing sculpture, installation, video, painting and photography.
Artwork that explores the concept of the American West simultaneously invites us to the unspoiled, untouched west that we long for, while encouraging a responsibility for the land. The name of the exhibition draws on the irony of naming. Beautiful places with names such as Bitter Creek discourage visitors, while Sweet Water changes the perception of a place disregarded and without appeal. This convention questions the way we remember the land, and in turn the way we create history. Water, whether bitter or sweet is what follows the frontier, “the end of where there is soil…”
