Du 8 septembre au 8 octobre l’exposition Regards sur la porcelaine à la Galerie Maeght réunit le designer français Olivier Gagnère et la designer japonaise Eiko Fukagawa, qui expose pour la première fois en France. La puissance graphique et colorée du parisien dialoguera avec les compositions élégantes et raffinées de l’héritière de la célèbre manufacture Fukagawa-Seiji.
Les liens étroits qu’entretiennent la Galerie Maeght, Olivier Gagnère et Eiko Fukagawa remontent au début des années 1990. Olivier Gagnère est alors captivé par la pâte et la polychromie si particulières qui font la renommée de la manufacture japonaise. Il réalise dans leurs ateliers des porcelaines éditées par La Galerie Maeght. Pour Isabelle Maeght: « tous deux puisent dans l’expertise ancestrale des plus grandes manufactures une immense liberté de création. Ils partagent une exigence et une audace formelle rares. » L'exposition, présente le dialogue entre de deux designers autour de la porcelaine japonaise ainsi que les créations réalisées par Olivier Gagnère pour Bernardaud à Limoges, Gien, Henriot à Quimper et Parigi en Italie.
From September 8th to October 8th, the exhibition “A look at porcelain” at the Galerie Maeght will bring together the French designer Olivier Gagnère and the Japanese designer Eiko Fukagwa who will be on show for the first time in France. The powerful graphics and colours of the Parisian will combine with the elegant and refined compositions of the heir to the famous manufacture Fukagawa-Seiji.
The close ties between the Galerie Maeght, Olivier Gagnère and Eiko Fukagwa date back to the early 1990s. The texture and the very special polychrome that is the hallmark of the Japanese manufacture captivate the designer. In their workshops, he made porcelains edited by the Galerie Maeght. For Isabelle Maeght, director of the gallery “both draw an immense freedom to create from the ancestral expertise of the biggest manufactures. They share a requirement and an uncommon formal boldness.” This exhibition is both a celebration of porcelain and the coming together of these two designers.

Christo et Jeanne-Claude

Du 4 juin au 27 novembre 2016, Christo créera l’événement à la Fondation Maeght avec un Mastaba monumental qui redéfinira l’échelle de la Cour Giacometti et plus globalement de l’architecture et des jardins conçus par Josep Lluís Sert.
Au pied de cette construction extérieure, haute de 9 mètres, longue de 17 et large de 9, le spectateur fera l’expérience d’une confrontation spectaculaire avec, d’abord, l’objet, la forme, les couleurs, puis l’espace, le temps et le rythme, confrontation rêvée par Christo et Jeanne-Claude depuis près de 50 ans. L’histoire de ce rêve est riche de sens et révélatrice d’une histoire artistique marquée par la continuité et la ténacité, à travers des projets qu’ils ont développés sur plusieurs décennies. Conçue par les artistes à la fin des années 1960, l’idée du projet de Mastaba pour la Fondation Maeght sera présentée par deux travaux préparatoires. Depuis, l’œuvre a largement été remaniée et revisitée. Christo et Jeanne-Claude ont déjà été montrés à la Fondation Maeght en 1985 avec une exposition sur des illustrations de leur oeuvre temporaire Surrounded Islands,Biscayne Bay, Greater Miami, Florida 1980-1983.
Dans cette nouvelle exposition, Christo a choisi de se concentrer sur un autre aspect de leur oeuvre, le travail avec des barils de pétrole. Ce qui a débuté sous forme de sculptures s’est développé en structures et projets de constructions de barils, tels que Christo et Jeanne-Claude l’ont réalisé en 1962 avec l’oeuvre Wall of Oil Barrels, dans différents environnements urbains, jusqu’au Mastaba monumental dans l’oasis de Liwa dans le désert d’Abu Dhabi.
From June 4th to November 27th 2016, Christo will create a sculpture of a monumental Mastaba that will redefine the scale of the Giacometti courtyard and, more generally, the architecture and gardens designed by Josep Lluís Sert.
The Mastaba at the Maeght Foundation will be 9 meters high, 17 meters long and 9 meters wide. The spectator will expérience a dramatic confrontation with the sculpture, first with its form and color and then with the work’s rhythms, space, and duration. For nearly 50 years, Christo and Jeanne-Claude have dreamed of this confrontation. The story of this dream is rich with meaning and reveals an artistic history marked by continuity and tenacity with projects they have developed over many decades. Conceived by the artists in the late 1960’s, the idea for the Maeght Mastaba project can be seen on display in two early preparatory works by Christo. Since its inception, the artwork has been extensively reworked and revisited. Christo and Jeanne-Claude were first shown at the Maeght Foundation in 1985 with an exhibition on the artists’ temporary artwork, the Surrounded Islands, Biscayne Bay, Greater Miami, Florida 1980-1983.
In this new exhibition, Christo has chosen to focus on another aspect of their artwork – their work dealing with oil barrels. What started as sculptures of barrel structures grew into projects such as Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s 1962 work Wall of Oil Barrels, barrel installations in different urban environments and the monumental Mastaba, intended for the oasis of Liwa in the Abu Dhabi Desert.
